Perennial Fruiting Plant with Sweet Tasting Pulp
Blue Bean or Blue Sausage Fruit produces a sweet tasting pulp. It is consumed in China called Wu-yueh-kua-teng. You peel it like a bean eating the flesh around the seeds. Ratings for flavor of this fruit give it a 3 out of 5 and some say it is ‘sweet but insipid’ like a mulberry or akebia fruit of which it is a close relative. Blue Bean is treated like a perennial of which it will produce fruit on one year stems, but under the right conditions it will grow into a shrub up to 8 ft. tall and wide. It can be grown as an edge woodland plant in dappled shade or full sun and prefers moist soils.Seedlings will grow fast after transplanting and create a long lived root system.Very easy to grow in a variety of climates from zone 5 to 10.
