Black Forest Sweet Cherry

Black Forest Sweet Cherry
Black Forest Sweet Cherry Black Forest Sweet Cherry
Wild Selections of the Sweet Cherry

This wild form of sweet cherry is from a collection of timber form and vigorous seedlings collected throughout central and northern Europe. Like Prunus serotina, wild black cherry, this strain is grown for its beautiful dark reddish brown wood as well as its fruit. Black Forest strain produces dark black fruits that can vary in size from 1/4 to 1/2 inch in size. The hard reddish brown wood is easily worked and is considered the top rated European timbers. The flavor is considered much like the wild black cherry of North America but without the tannins.  The growth of this species type is just incredible which makes it an ideal shade tree and an excellent high yielding fruit tree. No disease issues with the foliage and less problems with insect damage on the fruit. (previously named Forest sweet cherry.) We have good experience growing this tree on our farm. When ripe, the cherries are not as insipid as many cultivated sweet cherries that are grown in our area.
