The Dolgo was first introduced in the late 1800's from Russia. It was known for its extremely hardiness as well as its rather disease and insect resistant fruit. Over time the strain has changed a little and is no recognized as a quasi species with a propensity towards elongated 1 inch red apples. When we grew many of these we found there is some variation in the population but to be honest the seed sources for this strain could use a house cleaning. I just wish I had more room at my farm!  Luckily each grower that has grown either seedlings for us or seed has sent us nice images of the beautiful bright red apples that adorn this tree in the fall. -

Dolgo is a good crabapple for its fast growth, early to fruit from seed (3-4 years from planting) and its clean foliage. There is occaisionally some insect damage but in general very low amounts and not enough worth spraying for It is a great jelly apple and the birds slowly but surely consume over a period of two months as they hang on the tree.

Beautiful white flowers adorn the tree in the spring. Its hardiness is good to at least minus 35 and it can pollinate all other apples as well. Very useful in terms of its fruit, wildlife and pollination effects.
