This seed selection of open pollinated hybrids has its origins in northern Europe. There it has known to have survived below a minus 40 F winter with flying colors. Since then it has been used to a limited extent in Canada and Alaska in places where apples are few and far between. It is used both as a rootstock and a source of tart fruit for jelly and juice. We have been growing Ranetka now for over 15 years and found it to be incredibly productive. Fruits are produced  in dense clusters on young trees making it a kind of natural dwarf reaching only 10 ft. tall. The fruit varies from a russet brown to yellow 1/2 to 1 inch in size and is very tart. A few trees have red fruit. The fruits ripen early in August and can stay hard on the tree into winter.

Our Ranetka seed strain planting has been selected for vigor, strong growth and leaf retention. Our seed originally came from the most northern regions in the U.S. or Canada. We now produce our own seed from which these apple seedlings are grown.
