Flava American Cranberrybush
Most northern part of its range- from northern Montana or possibly Manitoba. Seed grown this yellow fruited selection produces a mix of yellow and red fruited seedlings that produce lots of fruit on a compact plant. Super hardy selection found growing in zone 2-3. Originally may have been the selection found in the 'middle of nowhere' by plant breeder, nurseryman Frank Skinner in Manitoba. Like the Phillips selection, its main attribute was the fruiting and the fruit quality for making jelly. The red ones produced from this strain really are better flavored when fully bletted by freezing and thawing. The flavor is cranberry like and is best picked in December and January. Unripe it is nearly impossible to consume. It is best to let frost ripen the fruit. The yellow ones ripen much earlier than the red but frost is still needed to mellow the astrigency and bitterness.
