Swamp White Oak with Sweet Low Tannin Acorns
ECOS Schuettes Oak was a seedling grown from a native swamp white oak stand that contained many large 3 ft. plus diameter trees. This seedling was selected from over 3,000 trees that had three times the growth rate. When the tree reached 4 ft tall it began producing acorns. Since then we have discovered many of its progeny also produce acorns on rather small 4-5 ft. trees. Our orchard trees of this cross are most like swamp white oak with a furry bur oak cap. Ecos produces sweet low tannin acorns that rarely contain oak weevil larvae in them. The quality is good enough for acorn bread with only one processing. This selection is a good wildlife producer for wet or dry soils. Trees tend to maintain a symmetrical upright growth with white bark on young branches. Medium yields annually. Height to 70 ft. with a 40 ft. spread.
