Durable Pear For Adverse Conditions-Deer Consume Them-They Do Not Degrade On The Ground

From Northern China, this species is one of the most rugged species we have grown. It is from very dry and high locations and has fruited well for us producing both the small and large fruited types. We are currently using the 2 inch oval fruit that you see in our image gallery. The fruits are very juicy and a great attractant of deer as the fruit stays hard on the ground in good condition into November. It has a tart flavor and is difficult to eat fresh as it is very fibrous and dense but the juice is quite good from it despite some astrigency. Trees are pyramidal in shape with horizontal branching.  All have very clean foliage and thick leaves. Rare species in commerce but has potential in hot dry areas or poor soils. The wood of this species is very hard resisting even those expensive hand saws. It might make a good rootstock as well. The small fruited types are olive shaped reaching up to 1 inch in size and usually stick in the branches eventually bletting as the cold descends into December.
