Kennebec Groundnut

4 Tubers, KEGR $14.75 Out of stock

One of the most northern selections of groundnut this medium sized tuber is highly productive found growing at the juncture of the Sandy and Kennebec River in Maine. Because of its short season, this selection can be grown much farther north than the Nutty selections. This selection does produce an edible pea which are said to be edible once cooked. Groundnuts were give a name meaning 'Rosary' by the French in early America as the tubers (beads) grow on rhizomes (strings).  This selection is quite dense growing and forms tubers around a central plant. It wouldn't suprise me this selection was a discovery long ago as its horticultural attributes made it much easier to cultivate and harvest. Brought to our attention by an avid outdoor explorer who uses his kayak to plant explore. He came upon the planting somewhat by accident. Good production with not a lot of excess stolons attached.

Ships in the spring and fall when dormant. If unavailable due to a crop shortage in the spring we will automatically ship them in the fall.
