Highly Productive-Rich Flavor-Blight Immune

'Precocious' represents our most productive and disease resistant hazelnut strain with larger nut size and a thinner shell than the American hazel. These were selected from both filazel and hazelbert open pollinated hybrids grown over the course of 30 years. To do this we had to select carefully from many thousands of seedlings and test different seedlings from immune plants.  By using the vast quantities of seed that we purchased from Grimo Nut Nursery, the late John Gordon and many others we found that the Gellatly hybrids were not exactly 'stable' and we had to winnow by selecting 'towards' the American hazelnut in the progeny. That eventually led to greater yields and high immunity to this 'wipe out' disease. The Precocious is not meant as a commercial crop, but some say we should clone a few of our selections as the yields have proven quite high on some seedlings weighing the branches to the ground. These are the seedlings we are using now for our ECOS seed source. Recently some universities are testing the Precocious in controlled trials.

Our vigorous seedlings produce in 3 to 4 years from seed and grow 2-3 ft. in one year on established plants. Once the plants reach 20 years old the root system is extensive and the plant can produce up to 10 lbs per plant easily. Precocious can be planted like a hedge 3-5 ft. apart or in singles 10-20 ft. apart. For pollination purposes plant two Precocious or have another American nearby to ensure pollination. Cannot ship to OR,WA.
