ECOS Pear Seeds ECOS

ECOS Pear Seeds
Great Diversity on a Global Scale

Our Ecos pears were developed from a single tree in Michigan whose Pakistani origins crossed with neighboring Asian and European pears. Fruits vary from 1-3 inch in size. Fruit is slightly tart and delicious processed into sauce syrups and jams.Tolerant to every soil type except wet. If you love grafted uniformity then run away from this mix, otherwise plant in abundance as the trees are incredibly healthy and vigorous compared to their cultivated cousins.  We collect only from the largest fruiting specimens. These tend to be tart pears with some astrigency within the skin. The flavor tends towards the Asian pear and shapes are usually round.

To germinate the seeds:  Plant in the fall 1/4 inch deep in sandy soil. Use a light compost to cover the seeds 1/8 inch deep. Tamp the seeds into the soil to hold them in place.  Seeds will emerge in early spring and are quite frost tolerant.  Place seeds 1 inch apart in the row.

For indoor germination:  Store in lightly damp Canadian peatmoss for 90-120 days at 33-39 F in the fridge. Seeds will sprout in roughly 60 days and will continue to sprout slowly in the refridgerator.  After 120 days, remove the remainder of the seeds and normally they will all continue to sprout in 1-2 weeks. When potting keep in mind the depth you are planting so the seed head is close to the surface of the soil and not overly buried. This is true with a lot of the pears and apples. Watch for mold with the fridge method.
