Buartblack Walnut Nuts

100 Nuts, BUBL_S-100 $180.00

Hybrid cross between black walnut and buartnut. This strain came originally from one of the largest buartnuts in the U.S. found in Michigan. We grew and selected what we thought may have been hybrids with black walnut from its seedlings and found this one which was incredibly productive.  Easy to grow from seed. Several seedlings of this parent tree exhibited what is known as hybrid vigor. One tree in particular I selected because of both its early branching and straight growth with symmetrical form. Scion wood is available with the purchase of the nuts upon request at no additional charge. Because of the crack out, this would be a good tree for both timber form as well as nut production which is very high. Initial tests show it to be slightly above 30 percent crack out which is good for a black walnut. The name of this tree to clonally propagate is: "Heavy Cropper" .

This is our second generation from a tree that cracks out halves using a hand compression cracker. The trees yield is the highest I have seen yet and the straight growth habit exceeds that of the parent tree which is more of a broad rounded tree structure.

Put the seeds in moist Canadian peat moss in the fridge in a zip lock bag. Seeds can be taken out in the spring after 90 to 120 days. Seeds will sprout after putting in room temperature for 1-3 weeks. After sprouting you can pot them or put them outside in their permanent location.  Tap roots develop first when growing walnuts from seed. It is possible a portion of the seeds will sprout the second year.
