From Iowa, this species is well known for its rich buttery flavor. Vigorous in growth, butternut is an easy walnut to grow from seed and is easy to transplant at a young age. Trees begin bearing form 3-8 years from seed making it a naturally precocious nut tree. Our seeds were wild collected from Iowa and appear not to be a hybrid of any type.
To Germinate the Seeds: Seeds have been fully cleaned and floated. So all that is needed is a cold moist period of 90-120 days. The nuts will then crack and a root will emerge. Some techniques to improve germination include buffing down the suture on a grinding stone to speed up the splitting of the shell. We suggest you add moist media to the nuts and let sit for a week before putting them in a refrigerator for 90-120 days at 34-38F. After 120 days put at room temperature. Seeds will sprout over the course of a month. 85 percent cut test on the seeds we offer in limited supply.
