Lotus Berry

Lotus Berry
Lotus Berry Lotus Berry
Cherry Like Fruit-Largest Fruits of the Hackberries

Although all the species of hackberries are edible, barely is it worth the time to consume what is essentially a pit with a thin skin of fruit on the surface. However, a number of species have been consumed for thousands of years including the cherry sized fruits of the European hackberry. This selection is processed into wine or eaten raw and is used in Spain, Greece and Iran. Said to be very sweet, this species is probably the best for human consumption. Makes a great shade tree which is very disease and insect resistant. Immune to witches broom too. The wood is known for its unique striations and patterns where it is used for furniture.  Fast growing to 80 feet. Has survived here in southern Michigan with no winter damage taking -15 F many times. We have numerous species of hackberries here but so far none have been as vigorous as the Lotus Berry.
