currently unavailable Natural Hybrid of Butternut and Japanese Walnut-Canker Resistant-Long Lived-Heavy Production of Nuts
Can grow up to 6 ft. in a single year and fruit in 3-6 years from seed. Like butternut clusters of nuts form up and down the branches in great profusion. The original parent tree that we used to create our seed trees yielded over 25 bushels of nuts one year. Buartnuts are big spreading trees with trunks reaching up to 4 ft. in diameter with a 90 ft. Crown. Although thick shelled the nuts are not at difficult to extract as black walnut once dried down a bit. This takes about a month at room temperature. We have many different types of buartnuts at our farm and this one is the most consistent in bearing. The leaves do not get anthracnose which causes many walnuts to defoliate by August. Many of the crosses from my seed orchard contains a very beautiful mix of these fast growing hybrids. They require some control of butternut curculio otherwise there is no crop. The wood quality if very good and similar to butternut. There is some difference in crack out meaning some kernels fall free of the shell once cracked. Others are more or less hung up in the shell and do not drop freely which requires another crack. The flavor is fantastic. It is like butter with a hint of smokiness. Only 20 percent kernel but worth cracking out to enjoy.
Buartnuts could be used for both wood production as well as nuts. The yields are very high with this selection, but the actual percentage is very low with less than one third of today's english walnut varieties in terms of kernel percentage.

Ease of Cultivation |
The easiest walnut to grow and fruit. The plant will regenerate its root quickly and grow fast once established. Also a good tree to direct seed. The plants tend to fruit quickly from seed in 4-8 years. The trees at this point are 2 inches in caliper. Curculio is a big problem with this hybrid and it does require a spray program or some other deterrent to control as it wipes out 100 percent of the crop. The insect itself can easily be controlled by organic based sprays but timing is critical. The nuts have a suture that usually allows a clean crack by hand vice crackers. It is a practical walnut to grow and enjoy. Resistant or immune to butternut canker. |
