currently unavailable Delicious Rich Minty Freshness Awakens the Senses-Excellent selection from seed for less than ideal soil types.
Selected seedlings were used to find a more robust and strong flavored spearmint adaptable to dry soil conditions. I started with several hundred seedlings and whittled it down to the best selections with heavy foliage production. Awaken seedlings produces a thick leaf and large long flower spikes that attract black swallowtails and many types of bees and butterflies. The rhizomes are larger than other mints I have grown. These large rhizomes equate to more vigor and longer lived than the field mints I have tried which need moist conditions to survive long term. Minty freshness is good with this selection. Dive in! Wake up!
Mints should be used in all tree crop and permaculture plantings. If large enough and mowing is done, the aroma takes over the gasoline powered engine. Mint wins. The rhizome type roots is not always a favorite for gardeners. I too have removed it from my homes flower gardens yet in the right location this is one kick in the pants excellent field plant. Just to walk through it and kick up the aroma is a joy. I see it has garnered the weed status in some states making it illegal to plant from roots. Illegal mint. Fascinating. The Forest Gump of human intelligence at work. But then again, this too will pass. Tea anyone?

Vigorous rhizome growth. Not a flower garden plant really but perfect for untended areas. Anyone can create a great mint tea from this selection with few insect pests affecting the leaves. One of the most vigorous from seed. Possibly uses included large field plantings, use with other tree and shrub crops for areas untended. Can compete with other grasses yet still grow well. Normally mint is a wetland species including the native species. This one is not. |
