This is the case for Bimundors oak.  Well known since the 1800's it is a spontaneous hybrid wherever english oak trees grow alongside white oak. When I first started collecting english oak acorns 'in town' they certainly produced a lot of acorns. They were always very clean, free of weevils and dropped free of the cap. Unfortunately, english oak is a short lived tree and suffers from mildew and borers eventually as the tree weakens over time. I would sometimes plant over 3000 trees of this species at a time only to find out really only 1 or 2 trees out of the batch that were immune to mildew.  During that process, I did select a few trees that showed exceptional vigor and complete immunity to mildew and moved them out to my open field. Today, 30 plus years later, these rounded crown trees are over 40 ft. tall and produce huge crops of acorns. Even from seed, this open pollinated seedlings really carry through the immunity from mildew as well as the precious nature of producing acorns as well as fast growth rate.

This particular swarm could be developed and refined into other acorn flour. The astringency would still need to be removed. Bimundors is not a low tannin acorn, but it is not as high as red oak. The clean acorns dropping free of the cap, the easy collection based on ripening and the lack of weevils make it a strong potential for cultivated oak orchards. As is the case with almost all heavy producing oak trees, it is biennial in production. This is normal state of affair with the oaks. It always happens with light crops inbetween until the tree can recoup from its surge of acorn production.  These are not exception, however having selections in an orchard would not necessarily mean an all or nothing scenario. I doubt they would sync together but no one has tested that to any degree.

VARIETIES INCLUDE:

"Acornlandia 1" oak    Clean leaves free of mildew-tree has a very symmetrical evenly spaced branching with a strong upright growth. Acorn production is done all along the branches and is the highest yield per tree at my farm. The trees production would require 2 years to recoup before another immense crop happens. Moderate sized acorns similar to english oak. This selection was from an open pollinated english oak  tree along a street in Kalamazoo, Michigan and is a vigorous seedling producer.

"Acornlandia 2" oak     Clean leaves free of mildew. This selection has a solid crown of dense large leaves. The acorn yield is very high and is also biennial bearing. The acorns are produced all along the branches and drop over a period of 2-3 weeks. The large acorns are free of weevils. They drop free of the cap making collection very easy. This selection has a yield slightly lower than "Acornlandia 1" but not much. The crown of this tree is almost round with dense branching evenly spaced along the trunk. It was an open pollinated seedling of english oak collected along a street in Kalamazoo, Michigan and is a vigorous seedling producer.

Plant Specs
Genus & Species Quercus x bimundorum (robur x alba)
Seed Source Michigan
Hardiness minus 30F
Height (ft) 50-70
Width (ft) 25-50
Pollination Requirements More than one tree is preferrable to get the highest yields as this improves the overlap of flowering. Self fertile to some extent as well.
Soil Can grow in a wide range of soils like any white oak. Not for wetlands.
Climate Zones 3-8. Can grow in climates suitable for white oaks in general.
Ease of Cultivation One of the easiest oaks to transplant due to its english oak background which has a fibrous root system as well as tap rooted. The trees provide a solid canopy of shade with clean foliage. Could easily be used as is a street tree as well as for wildlife and human food. Once established the trees fruit early from seed and grow vigorously in a wide variety of soils.
