Blue Universe Serviceberry Seeds

currently unavailable 'Blue Universe' represents an improved fruiting type of Michigan serviceberry originally collected in central Michigan found in front of a church.. I had seen this tree fruit over the course of the tenure of my cousin who was the minister there and was really inspired to collect the seed after seeing the large crops of blue fruit with little disease issues.  It truly looked like a universe of blue fruit hanging on a tree. The fruit was delicious with few seeds. I made a planting of them at my farm and after about 20 years of growing it, I realized this was one of the better selections of serviceberry for fruit production. 

'Blue Universe' can be grown from seed and is true from seed. The dark blue fruit along with its heavy yields makes it one of the most adapted at my farm in terms of disease and clean foliage that stays on the plant throughout the summer and fall. Its deep blue colored fruit are delicious with a rich apple blueberry type flavor. This plant can be cultivated for fruit production or used as a bird food plant. There is little variation in the seedlings, but it could be possible I could clonally produce a plant that is above the rest in terms of its fruit quality and/or yield. If that is truly the case, scionwood will be made available with the seeds so it could be grafted. For now, they appear identical in most ways, however  a few of the plants have a more vigorous growth. More evaluation needs to be done to demonstrate this value or any other variation found in the seedlings.
