sold out Hybrid cross between black walnut and buartnut. This strain came originally from one of the largest buartnuts in the U.S. found in Michigan. We grew and selected what we thought may have been hybrids with black walnut from its seedlings and found this one which was incredibly productive. Easy to grow from seed. Several seedlings of this parent tree exhibited what is known as hybrid vigor. One tree in particular I selected because of both its early branching and straight growth with symmetrical form.
Because of the high percentage of kernal and ease of crack out, this would be a good tree for both timber form as well as nut production which is very high. Initial tests show it to be slightly above 30 percent crack out which is good for a black walnut.
The seed nuts were collected from the tree shown in the image. It is our second generation from a tree that cracks out halves using a hand compression cracker. The trees yield is the highest I have seen yet and the straight growth habit exceeds that of the parent tree which is more of a broad rounded tree structure. Growth rate appears roughly the same for this as other hybrid walnuts I have grown but some seedlings show amazing speed which means it could be improved for hybrid vigor.
To germinate the seeds: Prior to germinate soak overnight in water then: Put the seeds in moist Canadian peat moss in the fridge in a zip lock bag. Seeds can be taken out in the spring after 90 to 120 days. Seeds will sprout after putting in room temperature for 1-3 weeks. After sprouting you can pot them or put them outside in their permanent location. Tap roots develop first when growing walnuts from seed. It is possible a portion of the seeds will sprout the second year but it is unusual.
This package comes with 200 seeds. If you wish for scion wood, request it and I will send it along with the seeds. The request should be done along with the order of seeds during checkout under comments. The clonal name for this tree is "Ecos Buildblack" should you want to clonally propagate it.
Butterblack Ecos- 100 seeds available: A selection of walnut that was given to me from seeds of a tree with a high degree of butternut traits found in the leaves, buds, mature bark and nuts. The finder of this walnut was near the town of Battle Creek Michigan. It was discovered in a woodland type environment and was not under cultivation or planted by anyone. The nuts are elongated with sharp ridges on them. The nuts are produced in small clusters. My seeds are likely crossed with the other seedling black walnuts I have in my orchard or possibly a nearby buartblack. The nuts crack out in halves despite the thick shell. The flavor is very good with this selection. Scionwood can be requested for this selection if requested with the nuts.
