Mary Jo Cabbage Rose

currently unavailable The Edible Rose Petal Rose

All roses like the swamp rose above produce edible flower petals. However, not all of them are rich in that flowery scent we know as a rose. In some cases the flower is very bland and fiber like and in others there is a not too pleasant after taste. There is quite a bit of variation. For a while I used dog rose petals to make rose petal jam. This ayurvedic medicine is very good and helps with going to sleep for some. I have relied on for years but normally just purchase it on line now.  So for many years, I began collecting the odd ball seeds of cultivated roses in an attempt to find a more forgiving rose to grow without pesticides as well finding a rose with good tasting rose petals. A lot of cultivated fancy smancy roses have very good floral notes you could say. I grew many seedlings, but most failed.. "Mary Jo" was the answer. It provided a large sprawling rose bush with clean foliage and rather large often floppy rose petals that have a divine fragrance and taste. I finally found what I was looking for in 'Mary Jo'.  The 'Mary Jo' does not produce seed and needs to be rooted. It will hopefully be rooted in 2022 and tested for that prior to going up for sale should you want to propagate it. The cabbage rose family is not hardy in Michigan as it is considered an Indian species rose. But in light of its use, cabbage rose is more appropriate name for one of the first introductions of roses just for its use for its petals. More will be known on its yields and uses later. Enjoy.
