Previously called the "Feral Potato" Now contains at least 10 genetically distinct selections.
Increased yields of rhizome type potatoes either densely packed or spread out via long runners and stolons.
Able to withstand freezing soil temperatures and overwinter
Resistant to viral overload.
Tolerant to semi-wild conditions with minimal inputs.
Highly productive small tuber selections with string like roots and dense tuber formation along the strings. Each plant can produce up to 100 tubers per plant. Able to survive over wintering with minimal viral infections as a perennial potato in subsequent years. Grown from other diploid selections open pollinated and selected over time for smaller potatoes and heavier yields with clumpy types of roots.
Selections are based on persistence in field conditions with cold and winter hardiness being the priority. Dense tuber production of small tubers down to 1/2 inch or less in size. Other selections will contain larger tubers up to 1 1/2 inch in size. Red, purple and white. Ten individual selections of one tuber each (Labeled alphabetically A thru J) are included in this collection which will be imaged here once harvest is done. Quantum was produced using only the extremely productive highly clustered potatoes on a branched like string with masses of side branching. To do this I selected from several hundred seedlings to just a few plants and then grew them for 4 years in my open field as a understory plant in my oak and hickory plantings as well as the grow bag system under irrigation.
This is the first potato selection as a perennial plant able to compete in mixed flower beds and wild plantings with minimal care. The tubers and plants are also the only dense sod forming selections that also work the best in potted systems. This opens up the possibility of growing a healthy food plant free of breeding, cultivation which integrates it into all planting systems and ecotypes as in an edible landscape.
The collection will contain at least 10 tubers of which can be propagated and grown as 'Quantum'. Each individual selection is labeled alphabetically as A,B,C,D,E,F,G,H,I,J . Each packet contains 1 or 2 tubers of each. The higher yielding ones often contain two tubers.
These were the best selections in terms of yields. Additional selections of the most productive types are added to insure the success of your planting which allows you to overwinter the selections to see which is best for your climate and soil conditions.
SEASON ENDS ON MAY 1, 2026.
