currently unavailable Pacific serviceberry represents one of the most western forms of saskatoon in the United States. It actually has been grown a long time throughout the world as a dwarf form of Amelanchier reaching only 2-4 ft. tall. As a result it was used a bit as an ornamental shrub known for its flowers and fruit. I grew several dozen seedlings of this group and found that it is one of the most productive saskatoons I have at my farm. Many of the plants started flowering when they were only one foot tall. The plants produce a thick colony of stoloniferous stems which creates a mound of foliage effect. The fruit production is extremely heavy. The fruits are small and often seedy. But certainly delicious to eat. The only effect that needs to be addressed is its susceptibility to scab which deforms the fruits. A neem spray would solve that. This appears with 'Regent' as well and is one of the issues growing serviceberries in general.
Pacific serviceberry could be considered a bird food plant, but it offers potential as a fruit plant for people because of its ease for hand picking and heavy yields. Further selection could be done to increase fruit size. It wouldn't take much to to do that really. The plant would be best grown in areas with drier air humidity as well as care given to the plant to prevent browse. It is the only saskatoon that is dwarf and comes true from seed.
