Gigant Oak

Selected form of hybrid oak from a natural hybrid of white oak, swamp white oak and possibly English oak, Gigant represents a second introduction in the "oaks need to be bigger" category of modern day oak cultivars. Gigant developed quickly into a tall and large caliper oak with excellent wide structural branching. Limbs are widely spaced with strong wide angled branches from the main trunk.  The trunk maintains a strong timber like growth along with secondary limbs filling out the almost perfectly oval shaped crown. Like Behemoth this selection is not crowded or compact in any way in terms of its limb structure. It is not densiformis! But it is another giant in the oak world and contains the perfect characteristics of oakdom in terms of fast growth, good rooting and clean foliage.

Found as a chance seedling in a bed of hybrid oaks at my farm, Gigant was immediately moved to a new location to evaluate further because I had thought it would be a good acorn producer. It was not. The yields are in the low to medium class of acorn producers in my planting. The acorns are very similar to white oak and free of weevils. This tree does make a good seedling producer. Preferred by squirrels, this one was tough to harvest in time. Wood quality is currently being evaluated.
