Michigan Apricot Seeds

currently unavailable Some of the oldest apricots are found in Michigan as individual trees near old farm homes.  As part of an heirloom and seed to tree movement, the apricot was distributed mostly by seed originally.  Eventually those heirloom trees were used to create cultivars like Goldcot as some of the early apricot varieties grown commercially in Michigan. You do not see that much anymore but you can still find some apricots being sold commercially here in Michigan. Most of the plantings are near the lake shore where the temperatures fluctuate less.  Here the soil combined with the climate is similar to that of their homeland China. I was able to find a few seeds or heirloom apricots while on vacation one year and grew these out with the hopes of improving the apricot for Michigan's non apricot climate. I think they were all seedlings to begin with. I did find a couple of robust trees in central Michigan and people have kindly sent me seeds of varieties or seedlings they have found. This planting has only fruited a few times, but they are also need more care than the other types I have.

These are generally good selections for pollination as well and work with all apricots. Even though an early flowering plant, in the right location apricots often bloom late enough to escape frosts.
