Ecos American Hazelnut Seeds

SOLD OUT Selected from our most precocious ECOS plants using only the heaviest bearing types including many with naturally thin shells. Although small in size, the American hazelnut is big in flavor. Immune to filbert blight and almost always immune to big bud mite, the American hazelnut is one of the most widely distributed nut plants in North America.

To germinate from seed: Add a light moisture laden media material like Canadian peat moss to a zip lock bag and refrigerate for 90-120 days. After 120 days, put at room temperature. Nuts will sprout from 1 to 6 weeks. The root will emerge first so be careful not to break that off, however if you do the seed will generate a new one.

Plant Specs

Ease of Cultivation Other than predation, this is one of the easiest nut trees to grow from seed. Fruiting occurs on small 3 year plants and yields are consistent although biennial bearing is common. Pick a sunny sight although is shade tolerant to some degree. These produce the most catkins that I have ever seen. Excellent pollinators for other hazelnuts.
