Early Production from Seed-White Oak Hybrid

Large, productive white oak tree from Kentucky "Lint" was noted for its heavy production of acorns. My seedlings are from the second generation of this selection. One of the seed collectors I was purchasing seeds from had a graft of the original in his planting. I only get very small amounts of the acorns from this source. I sold a few of them, but kept a few of the seedlings that had the most vigorous growth. Now into their 30th years, the trees show very nice growth with excellent acorn production. Because of the parentage in the planting, I was not sure what to expect from the plants however the results were mostly white oak with possibly some bur oak mixed within them.  The trees have a strong symmetrical branching with dominant central leader. The trees should good yield from seed at an early age. Seedlings are more branched and productive at an early age than a typical white oak tree which can take quite a long time to look more like a shade tree. It can take up to 30 years for the average white oak to reach seed bearing age. Lint seedlings produce in 6-10 years.

Varietal: "Dynamo" white oak represents the best of the selections from the Lint parentage which combines fast growth, clean foliage and strong central leader and wide spreading branches.  Unlike most white oaks, "Dynamo" has twice the growth rate of the species and develops quickly into a mature tree in half the time of most white oaks.  Acorn production is medium on this selection and may not produce many acorns unless cross pollinated by other white oaks. The parent tree shows exceptional vigor in its low organic soil. This selection is a great shade tree and could be further used for timber production and developed from seed into faster growing white oak species and hybrids. A few of these I have cut down in my nursery showed significant early development of the heartwood which was found in trees under 3 inches in caliper.
