'Spectacular'   Seed Mix

This is a mix of several species of Yucca including gurneyi, pallida, filamentosa and glauca. These were originally collected from the most northern reaches of their range from a collector who was loves the yucca plant and all of its variety.  Over two decades many of the plants I put out into our plantings died after winter. Most of the lost was due to the excessive moisture I have at my farm during the winter months.  The remainder of these selections are thriving. It was a sink or swim in terms of survival yet today many have persisted for two decades now in the open under one of my hybrid oaks.  All of them are flowering and fruiting very heavy now.  A few of the plants are very large reaching up to 3 ft. tall just on the foliage alone with flowers reaching upwards to 8 feet. Others have narrow and long flowering stalks with small seeds.

The differences between the subspecies are small and difficult to tell apart now as they have interbred so I have decided to not select them and use them as they changed over time. To have such a large robust growing populations at my farm it was only natural to collect the seeds for propagation and dispersal. I continue this today by planting them as an understory perennial plant in some of my walnut and oak plantings. Since they are easy to establish I plant them as I do maintenance at my farm or are fertilizing in the spring under the trees.   They do not require dormancy and the seeds do not attract rodents as they germinate. The Spectacular mixture is the hardiest versions of the southwestern species and can easily take minus 25F.

The yucca root is valuable in terms of its water penetrating abilities. You blend up a small chunk of root and add it to the water you are going to water plants in with. It makes water more slippery, with better percolation in the sandy soils I have.  Tension in the soil builds up in drought conditions which then makes it difficult for water to get to the roots of the plants. Yucca flowers and leaves are also edible. The basal part of the leaves are delicious to snack on and have a nice mild flavor.

Germination;  no dormancy is needed. Just plant the seeds by lightly covering them with soil. The soil mix should be light and drain well.  If you plant outside, remove the existing grasses or other perennial plants to allow for unobstructed sunlight to hit the emerging seedlings. They are shade tolerant but require as much light as possible in the early part of establishment.
