Yucca Species Seed Mixture

1000 seeds, YSMI_S-1000 $120.00 Out of stock

currently unavailable This is a mix of several species of Yucca including gurneyi, pallida and others. These were originally collected from the most northern reaches of their range from a collector who sent us the seeds. Over two decades many of the plants disappeared after winter, however the remainder of these selections really are cool looking with strong flowers and fantastic foliage. Some of them reach up to 5 ft. tall and others are more dwarf like.

This is a diverse mixture of seed grown yucca known mostly for their flowering and unique structure of evergreen foliage. It is hard to delineate these species. So the groups were planted at my farm very carefully and after a decade of watching them flower, I had the thought : "What the". The differences are small but the variation can be seen as the leaves or trunks can be distinct. I mix these as they are probably a true wild version of several species or subspecies found in the southwest but northern enough to tolerate both the moisture here in Michigan and the cold.  The narrow leaved yuccas will tolerate the cold but not the moisture and same with Yucca baccata which means you can over winter it, but as soon as you take it outside and plant it in normal Michigan soil it fades quickly. It basically rots over the course of a month. I see yucca as a savior in terms of its root. I think the root could be used for a variety of purposes for fruit and nut growers including water penetration in the soil and water dispersion for organic sprays. It is likely it has insecticidal or fungicidal properties and should be trialed for that. It is one amazing plant. The basal part of the leaves are delicious. It that could be selected you could easily create a more edible leafed version with thicker leaf stalks. They really are good to eat and have a nice mild flavor.

To germinate the seeds: no dormancy is needed. Just plant the seeds by lightly covering them with soil. The soil mix should be light and drain well. If you do it in your garden, the same method should be applied.
