Yulan Magnolia Seeds

500 Seeds, YUMA_S-500 $320.00 Out of stock

currently unavailable    Yulan Magnolia represents a tree magnolia capable of propagation from seed to produce a shade tree type Magnolia with large clean leaves as well as giant flowers in early spring. Yulan magnolia is also fully fertile and can produce itself from seed. This allows it  to be used as is from a seedling standpoint and to develop cultivars from. This selection is very vigorous from seed growing 2 ft, per year once established. In Michigan without irrigation, that is pretty good. The reason for this is its dense root system which spreads out like a web. The large leaves shade the ground quickly as the tree matures, eventually shading out perennial grasses that were initially very thick under the canopy. In a cultivar obsessed world, growing Magnolia from seed is considered....well fruitless.  In this case, it is the reason to grow the Ecos strain of Yulan magnolia. It fruits and produces seeds!  Very few plants of this species fruit in North America.

Yulan magnolia is a drought tolerant species and along with its large leaves makes it a beautiful tree to include in any landscape. The seed source of these wonderful trees originally came from Korea. This unknown cultivated source was probably much more cultivated and developed as a flowering tree than the other more southern versions. It still can frost damage like other Magnolias, but I would say it is similar to Saucer magnolia in its timing of flowering.

Plant Specs
Genus & Species Magnolia denudata
Seed Source Michigan
Hardiness -20 to -25F Parent trees showed no damage at minus 27F
Height (ft) 40-60 ft. with equal width. This seed strain is more tree like compared to others.
Pollination Requirements Flowers and fruits regularly here. Should be self fertile to some extent however because the information says difficult to fruit, I would plant more than one to get seeds.
Soil Does well in a variety of soils including alkaline soils. Grows well in dry rocky hillside soil here.
Climate Zones 5-9 Appears to do well throughout North America. Probably not in a dry climate.
Ease of Cultivation This is one of the few tree like Magnolias that could also be considered in a 'shade tree' class of its own. With early large pink flowers combined with large clean leaves and its ability to grow in dry soils makes it a from seed Magnolia highly desirable. This species is much more adaptable to dry soils than Cucumber magnolia is and is faster to establish and grow in sandy soils or alkaline soils. Because of its fast growth, shade tolerance and fruiting capabilities, this selection has very good possibilities in an industry that is cultivar obsessed.
