Selected varietal meant for field conditions in non-irrigated soils competitive to bunch grassses and tap rooted perennials. Most mints have a lot of wetland genetics within them which makes it difficult to grow without supplemental irrigation. For a while I was growing the Mitchum mint at my farm but it too was short lived. Awaken does not have that problem as it produces lots of rhizomes spreading much like the Applemint. Awaken is a robust and  strong flavored spearmint adaptable to dry soil conditions. The large rhizomes equate to a more vigorous and longer lived than the field mints I have tried which need moist conditions to survive long term. Minty freshness is good with this selection. Mints should be used in all tree crop, orchard and permaculture plantings including the mountain mints. In general people shy away from them because as a flower garden and landscape plant they can overwhelm everything else. Yet in field conditions it is an ideal plant for repelling insects and attracting pollinators. Awaken, like the applemint, is tolerant to drought and competitive enough to maintain itself in non wetland conditions as well as being mowed or tilled under periodically.  Tea time is here.
