Vigorous Seedling Growth-Heavenly Fragrance-Heavy Hip Production-Large Plant

This seedling hybrid rose is a selection that has heavy yields of hips which are similar to the dog rose, Rosa canina.  It produces clusters of rose hips in great density. The hips tend to blet or ripen to a soft stage but not rot on the plant making them even more valuable as this tends to make processing easier much like the medlars. The small one inch pink blossoms have a yellow center and attract lots of pollinators when in full bloom. Seedlings from this group are also vigorous making an thick hedge without the complications of a runner or stoloniferous rose. This plant can reach 6-10 ft. tall. This selection is excellent for fruit and flower.

The flowers are incredibly fragrant and attract a huge number of butterflies and bees. It is one of the few roses that you can smell hundreds of feet away if the wind is just right. The hips are produced on the canes in small clusters.

The parent plant is a good seedling producer yielding large vigorous dense plants that are ideal for further selection or to be grown as it because there is only small differences in plant structure and flowers. The yields of the hips could be improved on and this is the selection to do it with saving a lot of time finding the perfect high yielding hip producing rose better than the species canina and rugosa.

Cuttings are available upon request with the seeds are purchased. I include about  5-10 cuttings 6-12 inches long for rooting in the dormant seasons in winter. These can be rooted.

SWEET HEAVEN  :   Cultivated for its hips and flowers this selection is very vigorous plus produces clusters of solid bright red hips near the ends of the branches. Incredibly sweet single pink flowers with a strong fragrance. No foliar diseases present at our farm. Plants can be rooted for clonal reproduction. Older bushes develop an almost solid blanket of thorny old branches at the base. Canes live for at least 10 years or more. This is a super robust bush with single pink flowers.

To germinate the seeds: Store in lightly moist peat moss for 90-120 days in refrigerator storage from 33-38 F.  After 90 days, some of the seeds may germinate quickly. Pick those out and plant carefully in a well drained soil mix.  A portion of the seeds will not sprout but will split and grow the following season. Normally the rose seed has a hard and rather water repellant seed coat and letting the soil bacteria work on it , will cause the seed coat to break down and then allow for germination to take place.  The best method: Plant outside 1/8 inch deep outside in the fall placing seeds 1/4 inch apart. Easier to grow outside than in pots. Or put in a propagation tray outside and let go for up to 2 years. The seedlings will germinate slowly over the course of 2 years.
